Chit Chat & Gossip

Doing support for Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham  last Saturday  March 20th  at the Ariel Centre was great fun, Just how much talent can two people  be blessed with !!!  . For me having Mike  Weed as back up on whistle & bass was superb not to mention the joy of having Alicia Stolliday (my cello teacher) join us for rendition of Leonard Choens Song Of Bernadatte. CD sales were good . Mike & I have put ourselves out there as a duo now & our next gig is at The Maltsters Arms Harbertonford April 3rd kick off 8.30

I was sorry to miss my old pal Ian Bruce as he was gigging at The Blue Walnut on Saturday the 20th  when we were at the Ariel Centre its always feast or famine isnt it. However we had a wee chat on the phone & he will be back in the West Country on October 29th at the Bodmin Folk Club so we shall have a wee dram then.we would have chatted longer but he was eating a curry !!!

I had a ball at the Oldie Composer Song Launch in London last week. It has been a great honour to have my song Peace For The Child in the final 4 out of 300 entries. Do you mind if I name drop ! Sir Terry Wogan is a most charming & lovely man as is Aled Jones both were extremely complimentary about my song & Aled is going to play it on his Sunday morning show this week. Ahhh the high life as I said to Steve Mostyn will I ever be able to stand in a Tesco queue again after this ??. To which he replied no love  you get it delivered !!!!!!.

More fun two days after coming home  from the heady heights of London BBC I did a gig where brilliant poet Devons finest Matt Harvey was also performing.I have to admit to hearing Matt on radio  but had not met him.

He was extremely forgiving when seeing him with a reporters pad I mistook him for a reporter from the Totnes Times!!!!! There must be a poem waiting to be written about that . Suffice to say he was AMAZING & I throughly enjoed his gig.

A collaboration  conert of Matt Harvey Jill Bruley Mike & I raised almost £1000 for the Ricky Grant Unit at Torbay Hospital RESULT Id say

My Devon programme is receving more & more accolades & more & more bookings its is fun & I love performing ti

Well Padstow MayDay was as always fantastic. I caught up again with my old pal John Breeze & we busked for charity as we always do I am pleased to relate I am now deemed a BREEZETTE isnt life wonderful  !.Having just done support for them I was discussing the amazing talents of Aly Bain &  Phil Cunningham when a Scottish voice behind me said who's talking about Phil Cunningham ??!! & there was your man as always  good natured & full of fun , What a coincidence!!.

May 14th. Mike Weed & I spent an hour with Richard Digance for his Sunday Folk Programme it will go out on May23rd at 5pm. You have to be quick to keep up with Richard he is the master of fast one liners &  with his good humour the hour just flew by. We were also lucky to meet Sarah Macdougall who takes over the 2nd hour of the show

Mike and I at the Ariel Centre in Totnes

Re-Teaming up with Mike is a real  bonus his energetic bass playing  or haunting whistles add another dimension to the music ,consequently we are in more demand for concert/support/ & wedding work . we look forward to hearing from you should you need us !.

I would like to thank Brenda Burnside for her lovely feedback after the Traditions Concert she said & I quote. Dear Maggie & Mike Thank you for your exquisite performance on Sunday every single comment was positive & glowing.

I am writing a lot of new songs at the moment & one in particular Cheap Daily Life is going down very well. The true story of a  Devon dairy farmer who sold up  his old family farm as the  profits from the big supermarkets were just not enough to make his business viable. In his own words the bottled water in the chiller cabinet was more expensive than the milk I provide !! a sad sign of the times.

Ps We sang this song at Sidmouth & the audience response was mind blowing everyone is backing fair deals for farmers.

Another new song John Bowman is the true story of Scotsman John Bowman who believed he had  lost every single member of his family in the Clyde Bank bombings during the 2nd World War . Whilst making the harrowing journey to see if he could identify his dead relatives he walked straight into the arms of his own father whom he thought was dead .

These songs will be on CD 4 which we are revving up to record ASAP

Nov 18th Brigwater Arts Centre It was lovely to see Sean Cannon again after all these years his wonderful voice & humour have not diminished . His son Robert has also a fantastic  voice & great guitar style.

Nov 26th . Went to see Mick Ryan's  WONDERFUL Paupers Path the play is  expertly executed  assisted by Paul Downes & a beautiful cast the show was a knock out. Is it fair I ask you that some people are so gifted !!!. Brixham was left reeling in awe Thank you Mick & crew. xx
